Building Your Color Library with the Nix Circle Templates

Side Note: If you buy anything from my website, buy these pens. I’m serious. They’re Uni-ball Roller Rollerball Pens, Micro Point (0.5 mm), Black (12-Pack). I have shaky hands, and I love them. I keep buying boxes because I keep losing them. My dryer eats my socks. My house eats these pens. I literally just bought two more 12-packs while writing this. Buy them through my link, don’t buy them through my link… I don’t care. Just buy the pens.

Circle Template

These circle templates are designed to help you build your own color library using the Nix Color Sensor.

Print the template on the paper that works best for your chosen medium, fill in each circle with a single color, label it, and scan it with the Nix. As your collection grows, you’ll have a personal color library built from the actual supplies you own.

Different art supplies work best on different papers, so below are the papers I use for each medium while creating my own color inventory.

Recommended Paper

These are the papers I use while building my color library. They’re affordable, easy to find, and work well for the mediums listed below.

Alcohol Markers

  • Hammermill Premium Color Copy Cover/Cardstock (the pack with the chameleon)

Colored Pencils

  • Neenah Exact Vellum Bristol

My Experience: The 67 lb Neenah Exact Vellum Bristol isn’t the paper I’d choose for printed coloring pages. Its smoother surface has less tooth than I prefer for finished artwork. However, for creating Nix color swatches, it’s turning out to be a good option. Because it has less tooth, colored pencils reach full coverage more quickly, and so far my Nix scans have been very close to those from my heavier cardstock.

During my testing, this paper also fed successfully through both my Brother HL-L2405W monochrome laser printer and my HP laser printer without any issues.

Watercolor

  • Canson Artist Series Mixed Media

Paper Color: Although Canson lists this paper as white, it looks more like a soft, natural white than a bright white. My Nix measured it at approximately #F3F2EE.

Printing Notes: This pad measures 9” × 12” and comes wire-bound. Remove the sheet along the perforated edge, then trim the width to fit the widest paper size your printer accepts. The length does not need to be trimmed. During my testing, I used the Manual Feed setting and successfully printed the paper both straight through from front to back and through the rollers so it exited from the top. Before printing, choose the media type that best matches your paper, such as Heavy Paper, Cardstock, or Thick Paper, if your printer offers those settings.

These notes are based on my own testing with this paper. I haven’t tested other mixed media or watercolor papers yet.

Printer Tip

Before printing: Be sure to select the paper type that best matches the paper you’re using. Depending on your printer, this may be called Heavy Paper, Cardstock, Thick Paper, or something similar. Using the correct setting can improve both feeding and print quality.

Printing Tip: For the best results, print the template on one side of the paper only. Double-sided printing can show through and interfere with your swatches.
